## What proton therapy costs in Shanghai

A full course of proton therapy in Shanghai typically runs from about US$38,000 to US$55,000 for international self-pay patients. The city's flagship facility, the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center (SPHIC), uses a flat-rate model: roughly 278,000 yuan, about US$41,000, for the treatment itself, or around 310,000 yuan, about US$45,000, once hospitalization, imaging and nursing are folded in.

That rate has stayed fixed since the center opened in 2015\. A newer option, Ruijin Hospital's domestically built proton system, prices a course at up to about 170,000 yuan for eligible indications — close to half the imported-machine rate.

## Why the quote moves

The final figure depends on your tumor type, the number of fractions prescribed, and the complexity of your case. No center will confirm a price until it has reviewed your records, and a quote given before that review is an estimate rather than an offer.

## How Shanghai compares

Against Western pricing the gap is large. A comparable course runs roughly US$100,000 to US$200,000 in the United States and the United Kingdom, so Shanghai typically lands 50 to 70 per cent lower for equivalent technical capability.
